Project 3
Designing the catalog.

Design the cover pages and inside pages of the catalog and bind them to create a complete catalog

Artist Catalog.

Create an art catalog using your artist statement and your artwork.

Design the cover pages using Illustrator.

Design the inside pages using InDesign.

When completed this will be printed as a booklet i.e as a printed catalog.

There are 4 main required tasks to complete this project

  1. Writing an artist statement
  2. Designing the cover pages with Illustrator
  3. Creating the page layout with InDesign (Content will be your artwork and your artist statement)
  4. Print the catalog

You will determine the number of pages. However, there should be a minimum of 6 pages excluding the cover pages. On average it would be about 10 pages for most students.

Part 1

Write an artist statement. This should be about you as an artist and about your artwork. The statement should be a minimum of 300 words. It is fine to exceed this word count. There are many sites on the internet and many magazines in the art library that you may find very helpful in writing the artist statement.

Part 2

Using Illustrator design both the front and the back cover pages for the catalog. The covers should have a strong visual presence. Also, they should demonstrate your Adobe illustrator skills. In other words, look for a complex design solution instead of a simple design solution. The front and back covers should establish a “visual connection”. Back page should not be just a duplicate of the front with minor changes.

On the front cover, you should have your first and last names and a title for the catalog. Also, you can include other appropriate text. Note the cover page is the visual entry point to your catalog. It could very well be the reason that one would pick up the catalog to explore the contents.

Part 3

Design the inside pages of the catalog. The content for the catalog would be your artist statement and the images of your artwork. Spread the statement throughout the catalog. Do not use the statement as one block of text. Also, the images of artwork should spread throughout the catalog and include the following information with each of your artwork:

Title,

Medium,

Scale,

Date (year).

Part 4

Find a printing place ahead of time for printing and discuss the requirements on how you should bring the documents to them to print and what format the document should be brought. This will help the printing process go smoothly.

Note: When designing the pages the layout should be as a conventional book, on the right side the odd-numbered pages and on the left side the even-numbered pages.

Be sure to present the information without distractions such as complex background designs and vivid colors behind text and images. Create an environment where text could be read easily and images could be seen without distractions.

Align the content well. Using a grid to align the content would help structure the pages well.

Finally, you will bind the pages with the cover pages and submit as a complete catalog. The catalog should be bound Some techniques on how to bind the catalog will be discussed in class.

Page size 8 inches x 8 inches.

Note: When working on this project keep all the files such as text and image files in one folder. Images get linked to the document so to avoid any broken links please keep them all in one folder.

Be prepared to show your work in class during scheduled critiques. You do not need to have them printed for the critique.
