Second Project

Poster for a Jazz Performance

Vector Design. Create a poster using Adobe Illustrator.

Project 2

The Smackadoos is a jazz band and they are scheduled to perform in the Silver Spring Veterans Plaza, Downtown Silver Spring, MD., on October 23 Friday 2020, from 6:30 - 9:00 pm.

The five-member band consists of Snowy on guitar, Milou on piano, Cici on drums, Jiffy on saxophone and Lulu on bass. They play “jazz rock,” sometimes they call “jazz fusion or modern Jazz”.

The concert is sponsored by Think Outside of the Box Youth Association in Silver Spring.

Design a poster (vector image) to promote the concert. The visuals should reflect the genre of the music they play. The successful design will have a strong visual presence even when seen from a distance. It should still communicate/hint that this is an announcement for a musical event.

Steps to follow:

1) Research poster designs. Web searches will generate many examples. Concerts, Cinemas, and Theaters use poster to draw attention to their shows. Check libraries and bookstores for books on poster design as well as book covers. Book covers can be a great source of inspiration.

Submit three examples of designs that you find interesting for this topic. They could be posters for concerts or other designs such as music album covers and book-covers etc. Write briefly why you think each of them is successful.

Put the written document and the examples into one folder and submit that folder into your submit folder in the server. Do the research first so you have an understanding of the project better.

2) Sketch your ideas for the poster and have it ready to discuss your ideas during the first week of this project. Your sketches could be hand-drawn and scanned or computer-generated. These could be done on your sketch pad. Use whatever medium you like to do these sketches. These sketches are to function as a brainstorming session and get feedback from others.

3) Design the poster using Adobe Illustrator.
The poster size should be 11”x17”.

The Poster should include the following in bold (not necessarily in this order):

*Concert title: “Jazz with a Touch of Class”
*Name of the band “Smackadoos”
*Names of the musicians: Snowy on guitar, Milou on piano, Cici on drums, Jiffy on saxophone and Lulu on bass.
*Date and time of the concert: Friday October 23 Friday 2020, 6:30 - 9:00 pm
*Location: Veterans Plaza, Downtown Silver Spring, MD
*Sponsored by “Think Outside the Box Youth Association”

The visual impact of the poster is important. The first impression of the poster design should clearly communicate that this is an announcement for a Jazz concert/music performance.

4) As you develop your poster design, periodically, show the work in class. The sole purpose is for you to get feedback/comments from the instructor ,TA and your classmates. I encourage all of you to participate, not only to receive feedback but also to comment on other classmates work. Walk around the class and see what others are doing.

(a) Hand in the poster printed on the due date.
(b) Write a brief statement about the poster.

The grading will be based on creativity/originality, visual impact, clarity of the information presented, demonstration of Illustrator skills and presentation.

During the critiques please comment on other students' works. When commenting consider addressing some of the following issues: has the work made good use of Illustrator capabilities? Does the poster capture the essence of an announcement for a Jazz concert? What can you suggest to improve this poster? If you were asked to make one improvement what would that be? Anything else you can suggest that will help improve the work?

Highly recommend that you follow tutorials in Lynda training. http://lyndatraining.umd.edu

Be prepared to show your work in class during scheduled critiques. You do not need to have them printed for the critique.
