DIGITAL COLLAGE (Digital Image Manipulation) |
APPROACH: Collage has a long and rich history, collage assemblage from the early 20th century that continues today. The materials and techniques have changed (i.e. paper clippings, glue, etc. to photography, scanned images, computers, Photoshop) but the practice continues. ARTISTS WORKING IN MEDIUM: Picasso -Cubism GUIDELINES: Using photographs as a starting point create 3 compositions to align with the following categories/titles. Composition 1: Landscape Photographs must be taken by you on this campus for this project. The whole idea of collage is to use various source images and textures to create a work of your own. Try not to just plop in disparate images to create a scene. Be thoughtful about placement, content, color, etc. Here are some photoshop tutorials https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L-nfoHG8iM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C9p23iffNA Think about juxtaposition and suggestion as you are building your compositions. Don’t just construct a simple landscape with your images, think about how all of your elements can make a comment or a narrative. Use Photoshop to manipulate the composition. Photographs are only the starting point. Let your imagination and photoshop skills determine the outcome. Dimensions: Final compositions must be printed on 8 ½ x 11 paper no less than 72ppi (pixels per inch). Do not exceed 300ppi. Each composition should occupy more than ¾ of the 8.5 x 11 paper. PRESENTATION: Hand in the 3 printed compositions in three 3-ring binder plastic sleeves. Also, print thumbnail images of the original photographs on 3 separate sheets and include with each composition. Finally, place these compositions and the thumbnail documents in the Submit folder. With every composition please include two to three sentences about the work. Write about the choices you made (i.e.: placement, color, images, etc), ideas and expressions. Think about what you have learned from using Photoshop and other classes, such as studio fundamentals. Think about how these tools help or change your process. These sentences can be used as a basis for your artist statement in the third assignment. Final compositions no less than 72 Pixels/inch – print on good quality paper such as photo quality or glossy paper. Be prepared to show your work in class during scheduled critiques. You do not need to have them printed for the critique.
