Hi! I'm Maiya (pronounced MAY-yuh) and I am a psychology major at the University of Maryland. I have always been interested in the brain because it controls every aspect of every human--that seems crazy to me! I want to know why I am the way I am. What makes me...well...me? Am I defined by my brain? Who am I? These are all questions that I continue to have and I hope that the professors at UMD will help me learn a little bit more about myself each day. I also believe that majoring in psychology will increase my empathy and help me become a better, more understanding person. I am currently working on getting myself onto the pre-vet track at UMD; I (currently) am dreaming of becoming a veterinarian in the future. I believe that what I learned as a child--"Treat others the way you want to be treated"--applies to all living things. Pets give humans so much unconditional love, we humans should learn from that. Additionally, humans often look for their own interests, leaving native wildlife to suffer. I hope that one day my combined skills that I learned in College Park Scholars: Science and Global Change, psychology, and animal studies will help me change at least part of the world for the better.
