Grading Policies

Your course grade will be based on the sum of

your three in-class exam scores (maximum of 100 points each)
your Final Exam score (maximum of 200 points)
your five best Matlab project scores (maximum 20 of points each)
your ten best quiz scores (maximum of 10 points each)
your ten best discussion scores (maximum of 10 points each)

--- 300 points (about 37.5%),
--- 200 points (about 25.0%),
--- 100 points (about 12.5%),
--- 100 points (about 12.5%),
--- 100 points (about 12.5%).

The maximum total score possible for the course is 800 points. The point cutoffs for course grades
will be no higher (and might be a bit lower) than those set forth in the following table:

776 points (97%) for a grade of A+		616 points (77%) for a grade of C+
744 points (93%) for a grade of A		584 points (73%) for a grade of C
720 points (90%) for a grade of A-		560 points (70%) for a grade of C-
696 points (87%) for a grade of B+		536 points (67%) for a grade of D+
664 points (83%) for a grade of B		504 points (63%) for a grade of D
640 points (80%) for a grade of B-		480 points (60%) for a grade of D-

The actual point cutoffs for the course grades were

775 points for a grade of A+		615 points for a grade of C+
743 points for a grade of A		584 points for a grade of C
719 points for a grade of A-		560 points for a grade of C-
695 points for a grade of B+		436 points for a grade of D+
663 points for a grade of B		502 points for a grade of D
640 points for a grade of B-		480 points for a grade of D-

Final Exam Bonuses.
Anyone with more than 440 points whose final exam grade is above the next highest course grade cutoff will be advanced over that cutoff.
Anyone with more than 440 points whose final exam grade is above the next 2n course grade cutoffs will be advanced over the next n cutoffs.
Anyone with more than 440 points whose final exam grade is above the next 2n + 1 course grade cutoffs will be advanced over the next n + 1 cutoffs.
The actual cutoffs for the final exam grades were

193 points for a grade of A+		145 points for a grade of C+
185 points for a grade of A		137 points for a grade of C
177 points for a grade of A-		129 points for a grade of C-
170 points for a grade of B+		122 points for a grade of D+
163 points for a grade of B		115 points for a grade of D
154 points for a grade of B-		107 points for a grade of D-

No student with more than 440 points will be given a course grade that differs from their final exam grade by more than two letter grades.
Almost all students will be given a course grade that is within one letter grade of their final exam grade.
Qualitative factors such as your class participation might also be taken into account when determining your course grade.

Incomplete Grades.
The course grade of I will be awarded only if all the following conditions are met:

You have completed all but a small portion of the required work.
You have an average grade of C- or better on the work completed.
You have a valid reason for not completing the course on time.
You agree to make up the material within a short period of time.
You request the incomplete no later than the day after the final exam.

Academic Integrity Policies

The University has a nationally recognized Code of Academic Integrity, administered by the Student Honor Council.
It is expected that all students will abide by this code during all assignments, quizzes, and examinations in this course.

The Student Honor Council proposed and the University Senate approved an Honor Pledge.
Each student will be asked to handwrite and sign the University of Maryland Honor Pledge on each examination.
This Pledge reads:

I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized assistance on this examination.
