My practicum site was the C&D Recovery Center located in Clarksburg, MD. I was recommended to this site by my mother, and after my application, I had the honor of becoming the first intern at the C&D Recovery Center, led by my wonderful site advisor Mr. Mark Minnick. The advice I want to give to other students is that if you see an opportunity at a site you are interested in, no matter whether they are recruiting interns or not, you can always ask. They might just be there to accept you, just like how lucky I was. The tasks I performed at this site mainly had two parts. One part is observing and learning how the industry works. I have gotten the chance to witness how the nearby industrial residues were transferred into the industry. I have gone to the two landfilling sites to learn about where and how the landfilling areas were made, and how the nonrecyclable materials were treated and buried there. I have also gained valuable experience in how different recyclable materials were sent to corresponding industries to reuse and sell recycled materials. The second part was the opportunity for me to do hands-on work. I have worked on the assembling line with other colleagues to separate out the recyclable materials such as wood, metals, and cardboard. It is my first time working directly on the assembly line in such environments along with other colleagues. I was wearing a protective helmet, boots, gloves, goggles, and masks. It was a Though it was an unpaid internship, I have learned so many valuable lessons. During the internship, I appreciated so much the connection between my knowledge and actually seeing the site. From the first-hand experience, I also understand it is definitely a hard job to work whether it's separating on the picking line, or organizing the whole industry and making it work effectively. This internship has also given me the idea of a potential future work opportunity. I could definitely start as one of the workers on the site or look for a position on recycling or selling recycled materials depending on the situation.
