Lauren Grove's SGC Time Capsule Essay

My best piece of advice is to never be afraid to ask questions. Whether this is in lecture, lab, or talking to an advisor. Aside from the initial embarrassment of not knowing something, asking a question will always be more beneficial than staying quiet. I was able to get a lab job as a freshman because I asked my professor if he knew any good summer internships in D.C. Although I did not outright ask him for a lab job, the next time he was looking for an undergraduate researcher, I was already in his mind. The worst someone can say is no. And trust me, people will say no to you. But, college is not just for academic learning. It is a tool to learn how to navigate social situations in your potential field of work. Rejection means a lot less when you are beginning. That being said, it is important to have multiple backups. All the way up to Plan Z if you can. I applied to 15 different internships for the summer after my freshman year. Ten of them rejected me. The other five didn't even bother to email me a rejection letter. If I hadn't already been working in a lab, I would have lost a summer of potential lab work.

While preparing for getting a job is important, remember that college is also a place to make friends and socialize. Do not burn yourself out chasing a perfect grade. Focus more on understanding the material than being able to hack an exam. If you do not make time for yourself, your body will make time for you. It will not be a convenient time for you. Recovering will take longer than if you had given yourself breaks from the beginning. If you feel sick, do not try to power through. You are coming to a school with over 30,000 students from all over the world. Your immune system is not prepared. Vitamin C and electrolytes are your best friend. If you are sick go to the health center, most likely every other student has what you have (frat flu is a real thing). If you are injured, please see an actual doctor, they will be more helpful and less stressful than going to the health center.

Call your parents. They miss you!!! And if you have pets, you can get updates on them. If you have siblings on campus, annoy them. I break into my brother's apartment at least once a month to keep him on his toes. Do the same. If you have siblings off campus, annoy them even more. I text my sister every time I see a squirrel on campus. She hates it. I think it's great.

Don't be afraid to look a little stupid. My best memories are from when my friends and I decided to do something a little ridiculous and had fun. People might judge you and they probably aren't the most important people in the world. Don't forget to swim in the fountain. Just make sure you do it when it's warm.

The on-campus food is overpriced and overrated. Go to Sam's Club or Costco and get a pack of whatever food you think you'll need while living in your dorm. South Campus has the best dining hall. The Y is flashy but overcrowded and there's so much food the quality isn't as good. Treat yourself every once and a while. I get an iced latte after every exam. Give yourself a little reward when you've been working hard.
