My expectation of college was way different than the reality of it. First was my classes outside of my CPSG100 class were so different than my expectations of them. I believed that the class would be much harder to take as they are college courses and that there would only be lecture sessions with hundreds of students learn for the teacher. I did not think that the semester would go by so fast also as the year seemed to flow by. Lasty my expectation of the classes would be that I would be taking a ton of note for every class and would have a ton of work. These all really opposed to the realty of all my classes. First most of my class was discussion class and for the most part we only had one to three lectures per week. Then they were not as much harder than high school level classes and for some they were much easier. I also found that the teacher or more than willing to help you if you are found to be struggling and there are many support groups to help you. Lasty there were only two classes where I took notes in and there workload over all was not too bad. Then on to my CPSG100 class, the main things that was covered that I didn’t expect was learning about argumentation and logical fallacies and html file creation. They both were really interesting to learn about because for argumentation and logical fallacies I have heard of some of them and then others I have never heard about. Then for creating html files it was a cool way to learn about ways to create a website and you guys did it a really good job making easy to understand and to create one. One thing that was not talked about that I thought would be spoken more on would be what we can do on to fight against climate change. I thought we would have talked about CO2 reduction and how we are moving away from fossil fuels. The outside-of-classroom activities was very different from what I expected. I though they would be like high school field trips were the teacher would lead us everywhere and we would follow their schedule. This was not at all true as for both trips we took they were student lead as the teachers just gave us free rein to go were ever, we wanted and as long as we did the assignment give it could end whenever we wanted. Life on campus was much different then I thought it would have been in high school. I thought that every weekend there would be massive parties and that the dorm would be a wild place where people would meet up and hang out. Then I also thought that many people would be hanging out and that I would be hungry all the time as I have no money to buy things and that the food would be really bad. The reality is much different then my expectation as there are very few parties that I know of. Then the dorm is a really quite place where many people mind their own business and don’t talk to each other beside a simple hi. Then on to the lobby were nothing really ever happens their bedside people doing some work. Lasty food is not a big problem around campus. With there being three different dining halls that serve different food there is away options to eat and I am not stuck eating ramen. The biggest thing the is different to reality was that I would love living in dorm but in reality, I find that going home is really better then staying in my dorm by myself. Lastly the advice that I would give to future SGC students to ease them into college life would be that they should join a club that is interesting to them and have great people in them. This was the biggest helper for me going into college were I joined the rugby team and made great friend with everyone on the team. Hanging out with them really helped with my homesickness and gave me a place where I felt like I belonged. Then there were many older students that I could look up to and ask question about thing. The other thing that I would tell future students would be to make as many friends in your classes as you can. This will help you if you are struggling as there are people that you can talk to about your struggle that are not a teacher or teacher assistant. Then you can hang out with each other outside of class which help with you homesickness. They also can make class better to go to as you always have someone you can talk to in class. The last advice I would give would be to look you professor up on planet-terp as getting a good professor can make or break the class.
