John Skae's "Time Capsule" Reflection Essay

As a general biology major, I did not realize the amount of chemistry I would be taking in college. It is a lot more than I expected. It is definitely one of the more challenging courses I've taken on campus. I discovered this class because it was a part of my requirements for my major. One major strategy that helped me with this class was finding a study group I was able to meet with to review the material. They helped explain things to me I did not understand and vice versa. Another class I found I really liked was oral communications. This class is a gen-ed so it was not major based but I still was able to have fun and get my work done while doing well in the class. It was an easy grade booster and it lessened the stress of having to do well my first semester in college. One strategy incoming students can take advantage of is this, especially with in person classes. These students can find individuals in their lectures to become friends with and study material together. One great relationship I formed was with my comm107 teacher. She was a graduate student so she was still on the younger side and she was able to make lectures a lot of fun and engaging. This class was actually in person even in the fall semester this year. Mostly everyone in the class was a freshman so she understood everything we were doing coming to campus and all the things we were adjusting to in college. One of the best pieces of advice I could give to an incoming freshman is to attend as many office hours as possible. This is the time you will be able to talk to the professor on a 1 on 1 atmosphere and they will remember your name when grading papers. Definitely become friends with the other people in your classes. Most likely, they will have a very similar schedule as you do. This will allow you to walk around campus with them and get to know them on a personal level to have fun with them outside the classroom. I did this but it was difficult to do so only because classes were all virtual. Personally, I decided to join a fraternity to get a somewhat normal social college experience. This allowed me to meet a lot of new people I never thought I would have in the past. Also, a good amount of them I have similar classes with so I got the best of both worlds with having a group of friends to socialize with but also study. My biggest struggle in academic life was beginning to learn how to study. In high school I would always start studying the night before or maybe a day in advance. I think many people can agree with me with this because high school was not that difficult besides a few classes. Now, I had to learn how to start studying a few days in advance for exams. I recommend studying and taking good notes so that when a midterm exam comes, studying is so much easier.
