Jack Malone's 3 Semester Review Essay

After 3 Semesters here at UMD, I am almost finished with the scholars program. It has been a good experience so far, and I hope the practicum next semester will continue the trend. I am a computer science major so the material we discuss in class is not as relevant to my major but it is still interesting to learn about. If we do not discuss climate change and begin to put measures in place to lessen its impacts it will not matter what I majored in because the Earth will become unlivable. In my freshman year, classes were online so it was a much different experience than I have ever had during my education. But this fall, classes resumed being on campus meaning I could now meet other students in colloquium and my other classes. I enjoyed the group projects we had in colloquium as it made it easier to meet many different people in the class especially considering my other classes were mostly lectures which made it harder to have interactions with the students around me. I especially enjoyed the last group project we did this semester in which we were assigned countries as a group and had to use diplomacy to bargain for different climate change solutions as it allowed me to interact with most of the class during the bartering process that took place during the assignment. I have also encountered some of the material we learned in SGC outside of class. First, Over Thanksgiving break I had a discussion with my family where I used some of the information I learned in SGC during the discussion when we were talking about climate change. Secondly, I used information from SGC in my astronomy class when we were discussing how climate change on Earth could be affected by things in space and vice versa. My favorite classes over these last three semesters are definitely two of the computer science classes I took, CMSC216 and CMSC132. They are both required classes to continue the major but I found them very interesting. CMSC132 is the last computer science class for freshman which is done in Java and pertains to object oriented programming and was a great introduction to more intermediate level coding challenges. This semester I took CMSC216 which is one of the harder classes that is required. It is known as the first weed out class for CS. This class is done in C which is an older language that does not have as many quality of life improvements in order to give you more control over exactly what happens which favors speed and saving memory. This class was definitely the hardest class I have taken so far and I have enjoyed the challenges it has posed to me this semester, and I am looking forward to taking CMSC330 and 351 next semester which are supposed to be even harder. With all of the challenges I have faced and the things I have learned over the last three semesters, I am very excited for the spring semester and my practicum project and all of the things I can accomplish in the coming years at UMD.
