Jacob Scabis's "Freshman Time Capsule" Reflection Essay

Of the small group of classes that I have taken in my first two semesters, the one that has surprised me the most would have to be CHEM237 (organic chemistry 1). While this class has not been anything close to a breeze, in fact more of the opposite, I have really enjoyed my time in that class. It is the first class that I've really had any major "Aha!" moments after grinding for hours. Also, since the lab was the only in person class I had in my second semester, it has been the only real chance at making friends within my major. There's a special sort of bond that forms as a group when you meet as a big group in discord and put all of your brain cells together to work out a problem set.

Since most of my classes have been online due to the pandemic, I have not really had much of a chance building a relationship with my professors. I do enjoy a bit of a chat with my COMM107 professor before our zoom meetings since I usually show up first. I also have some good talks with my CHEM237 Lab TA, but that has been it. I look forward to the future where I have some in person classes and taking some smaller, upper-level classes where I can talk more with my professors. Obviously I have my advisor with whom I have met twice to talk about registration and my plan for the future, but I can't really count that as a strong relationship.

Like I said earlier about my orgo 1 class, my relationships with my classmates have basically gotten me through that class. Our time in discord discussing each problem has proven to be invaluable in learning the material. When you have 20+ people working through a problem set together, you get so many different perspectives on the same problem nothing can stand in your way. That may be a bit of an exaggeration but honestly those discord calls the night before a problem set or lab is due has really helped me and I hope they don't disappear once classes are in person. For any incoming freshman I would recommend joining any class GroupMe chats and discords that you can. There is a big GroupMe for the Class of 2024 that has a link to a spreadsheet with links to a GroupMe for almost every class each semester.

In all honesty, the one aspect of University life that I was least prepared for is maintaining a sleep schedule while living in a room alone. There have been countless times when my alarm goes off at 7:30 and I just set another for a half hour later, and then another, and then another until it's time for my 11:00 class. I still haven't figured out how to force myself to get up early but I'll have to figure it out somehow since I have a discussion section at 8:00 next semester.
