Overall, I would say that I had a pretty good freshman year. I would say that my year went a lot better than it did for a lot of other freshmen, which I am very grateful for. I was able to make a lot more friends than I thought that I would, although I did get lucky in the fact that there were a lot of good people on my floor this year. Overall, I would say that the class that was the biggest revelation for me was the chemistry lab classes. I took CHEM136 (CHEM132) in the fall semester and CHEM232 in the spring semester, and they were a lot more work than I thought that they were going to be. The grading for assignments in these classes was pretty harsh. There were several times when I lost points for post lab questions due to something that I should have said that was not stated clearly in the question description. These two classes were definitely the biggest shock for me because I did not think that a one credit class would be so much work. I would say that really the only relationship that I built with any of my professors over the course of the year was with Dr. Merck and Dr. Holtz. The only other professor that I had a one on one conversation with all year was my ENGL101 professor, and I am a STEM major, so that does not really help. I never really had the opportunity to talk with any of my other professors because of the way classes were set up due to covid. That is one thing that I wish that I had been able to do this semester so that I could network and try to find some opportunities for a good internship or research position over the summer. I have definitely used some of the connections that I have made with other people on campus to help me cope with this strange year. I have had people to confide in and to relax with on the weekends, which I definitely needed this year. The main thing that blocked me from meeting new people and making new friends was the pandemic. This entire year, I only met two other people that are majoring in chemical engineering, so I have not met most of the people that I will be spending the next 3 years working with. I would say that incoming freshmen should try to make as many friends as possible in your major specific classes. These are the people that you will be spending a lot of your time with, so you should get to know them as best as possible. I would say that I was least prepared for the studying and work aspect of college. I did not study a lot in high school, so I was very unprepared for the big exams that I had to take. I also was not very efficient with my work in the past two semesters. I wasted a lot of time while I was working looking at my phone and watching videos, which is something that I regret a lot. It led to me losing a lot of points because I could not really work on some assignments until right before they were due, and it showed in my grade.
