Abel moved to a farm of 100 acres in New Rochelle, New York, which had been purchased by his father in 1719, and became a prominent citizen of that place. His father when he died in 1743 bequeathed this land to Abel.4 At some time in or after 1728, his father was induced to sell Abel a farm of 200 acres in New Rochelle; after the deed was recorded, his father changed his mind and the farm was reconveyed back to him on the same day. Abel continued to cultivate the land and pay the taxes until after his father's death.1
Abel Devaux died in 1774.5
Abel Devaux left a will in which he bequeathed his property to his children, and divided his slaves as follows: To Abel, Jr., "one negro wench Kate"; to Frederick, Harry; to Andrew [Andre] the boy Isaac; and to Magdalena, the wench Jane.5 The abstract in William Pelletreau's book gives the date of the will as 22 April 1774; proved 29 July 1774.6 Seacord's book says the will was proved on 18 August 1774.2
