James Alexander Troup was born in September 1928 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the son of Basil Troup and Margaret Linklater.

James Alexander Troup married Diana Rae on 4 April 1952.

He was the editor of the book "The Ice-Bound Whalers: The Story of the Dee and the Grenville Bay, 1836-37" published 1987 by The Orkney Press, in association with Stromness Museum, 129 pages. From the flyleaf: James A. Troup, writer and broadcaster on the Arctic whaling industry, is principal teacher of history at Stromness in Orknay, regular port-of-call of the British whaling fleet.

Margaret Troupe was in correspondence with him, but had not met him in person as of 2001.
