Charles Stockbridge was born on 26 January 1633/34, probably in Rayleigh, Essex, England.1,2,3,4 He was the son of John Stockbridge and Anne Kendall.
Charles Stockbridge and his parents left the Port of London 17 June 1635 on the Blessing, John Lecester, master, and arrived in New England in July.5,6,7,3
Charles Stockbridge married Abigail Pierce about 1657.8
Charles Stockbridge lived first in Boston, then in Charlestown, and afterwards in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on his father's property.1 On 10 February 1673/4 (Deane9 gives 1665) Charles purchased George Russell's half interest in the Scituate gristmill on the First Herring Brook, becoming the sole owner of what was known (until about 1880) as the Stockbridge Mills.10 He and Abigail Pierce sued one Joseph Turner in 1669 for defamation and slander, claiming that Turner had called Charles "a coocally rogue" and a "coocally raskall" and Abigail "as very a strumpett as any in New England" and "a brasen faced whore." Turner was found guilty and fined £100.11
Charles was said to have built, by contract, the second water mill in Plymouth in 1676; also a corn mill on the Third Herring Brook in Hanover, in 1677.12,9 Charles had interests in several mills, and served the community in a number of positions.13
Charles Stockbridge died on 28 December 1683 in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, at age 49.14,15,8
