John Prentiss Benson was born on 8 February 1865 in Salem, Massachusetts.1
He went to Paris in 1886 with the intention of preparing to be an architect, and like Edgar Alonzo Josselyn found lodgings at 66 Rue de Seine.2 He studied at L'Academie Julian, eventually qualifying to take courses in architecture, drawing, and watercolors at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts.2 He returned to the United States late in 1889, practiced architecture in New York City, and eventually became a well-known painter of marine scenes.3
