John Gay was born about 1611 in Ashford, Kent, England.1

In February 1630 he attended a meeting of Puritans in Plymouth, England, to plan emigration to the new world.2 He embarked on 30 March 1630 in a company of 140 in the 400-ton ship Mary and John.3 After a voyage of seventy days the company entered the harbor of Nantucket, Massachusetts.3

John Gay settled in Watertown, Massachusetts; he owned 40 acres in the Great Dividends and the Beaver Brooks plowlands, and was admitted as a Freeman on 6 May 1635.4,3 His name appeared 6 September 1636 on the petition for the incorporation of the plantation at Dedham, and he was one of the original proprietors of land there.5,6,3

John Gay married Joanna ____ on 4 March 1638 at Dedham, Massachusetts.1

John Gay died on 4 March 1688 in Dedham, Massachusetts.1,5,7,6,3,8 He was buried in the Old Village Cemetery, Dedham, Massachusetts, a very small cemetery with unmarked graves.1 He left a will dated 18 December 1686 and proved 17 December 1689.5,6,3
