From Martha DeVoe's 1997 Christmas letter to family members:
Thia has not been a good year for us. As we both near our 90s our medical problems seem to increase. Ken's memory failed him enough so that he is now permanently in a Nursing Home. I tried to take care of him but this summer it was too much for my heart and I landed in the hospital. Our doctor and the family urged me to leave Ken in the Nursing Home where he had gone because of some problems of his own. It was a very upsetting decision to make.
. . . Without Ken here our place hasn't meant as much to me and the upkeep rather overwhelmed me this summer. I have sold the house and will move after the holidays, cats and all, to a Senior housing complex.
