Mr. Cyrus Raymond:- I can tell you who picked up the colors that Corporal Burns had, as I did it. Burns was shot over the right eye, as the order to retreat was given, and fell over on the colors, and I had to roll him over to get. them. (J. C. Mayne)

Vol. VI ("Historical Gleanings" Volume Two), p. 163 (typewritten):

James Mayne of Company G brought the colors off the field and carried them until along in the winter of 1863 or 1864. One day while on regimental drill Lieut. Col. Wilcoxson made a mistake and Mayne, having the colors, stodd [sic] fast while others of the regiment executed the movement. Wilcoxson repremanded him very sharply, saying "If you had been in the front of the enemy you would not have stayed there." Mayne felt so bad over it that he gave up the colors.
