Freshman year at university brought me a multitude of eye-opening experiences, particularly in my math and science courses. I was taken aback by the swift pace and heavy workload of my math classes, which differed greatly from the more classwork-oriented and lecture-dependent approach of my high school days. In courses like statistics and calculus, the completion and comprehension of homework assignments proved pivotal for success in exams and overall understanding of the material. On the other hand, my biology class and lab were a whirlwind of hands-on activities, demanding time-sensitive tasks and quick thinking. The breadth of knowledge we acquired in such a short span of time was astounding, and our lab sessions often involved exciting experiments and venturing beyond the confines of the classroom. This stark contrast to the passive presentations in high school science classes was both exhilarating and challenging. To adapt to these significant changes, I found that thoroughly reading the syllabus and lab manuals ahead of time, coupled with early initiation of homework, proved immensely helpful. Recognizing the importance of establishing personal connections with my professors, I actively engaged in class discussions and made it a point to attend office hours. This proactive approach not only allowed me to forge strong relationships with experts in my field but also provided invaluable insights that couldn't be gleaned from lectures alone. By making myself available and familiar to the professors, I was able to tap into a wealth of knowledge and guidance. Another crucial aspect of my freshman year was cultivating new friendships. The college environment naturally fosters a desire to meet new people, and I eagerly embraced the opportunity to develop connections with fellow students who were also navigating this uncharted territory. These friendships not only assuaged my initial fears of the unfamiliar surroundings but also played a vital role in my personal growth. While it can be overwhelming to meet numerous individuals during this period, it became clear that only a select few would remain steadfast companions.
