My Background

Over the last few decades that I have been a member of the Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) fields, I've worked in numerous educational settings and international communities in the United States as a language teacher/tutor/teacher assistant, language teacher educator, and researcher. In addition, my career led me to various work opportunitites abroad: (1) as the first English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Fulbright Fellow to the Slovak Republic, where I researched changes in English language curricula from the fall of communism to the country's entrance into the euro zone; (2) as an English teacher, teacher educator, and administrator for the largest language school in Tokyo, Japan; (3) as a Visiting Professor in Foreign Language and Teacher Education Departments in Wuhan, China, and Baja California, Mexico; (4) as an English/Spanish translator at an international education not-for-profit in Madrid, Spain.

Currently, I am Associate Clinical Professor of Applied Linguistics and Language Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, as well as the Associate Director for the Multilingual Research Center here at the University of Maryland, College Park. Prior to joining the university, I received my Ed.D. in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University, my M.A. in Linguistics from San Diego State University, and my B.A. in International Relations and Spanish from American University.
