Connor's Practicum Internship Reflection Essay

During my internship at a physical escape room business last summer, I had the opportunity to work on translating their rooms into virtual games. Our goal was to market these games online potentially. Using Unity, I collaborated with the team to model and script the virtual environments, ensuring that they accurately captured the essence of the physical escape rooms. In addition to the technical aspects, I also had the responsibility of playtesting the themed rooms. This involved adapting any details or deviations from the physical versions to enhance the virtual experience. I also improved my programming skills in C# to develop various components of the game.

Through this internship, I gained valuable insights into teamwork and multitasking. Working with a diverse team, I learned effective communication, active listening, and problem-solving skills. I became more comfortable explaining my work to others and finding collaborative solutions within a team. This experience exposed me to the world of 3D and virtual immersive environments in a professional setting. I realized the potential of immersive technologies to create captivating and interactive experiences. It has sparked my interest in pursuing similar work that combines technology, creativity, and human engagement.

Translating physical escape rooms into virtual games has connections to science and society. These virtual experiences can go beyond mere entertainment and be utilized for educational purposes. By gamifying educational content, virtual escape rooms can make complex concepts more accessible and engaging. They also promote critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Looking to the future, I aspire to work with similar technologies and immersive environments. I aim to be part of a team that pushes the boundaries of virtual experiences, using innovative technologies to create compelling narratives and educational platforms. I am also interested in exploring the emerging fields of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to contribute to developing cutting-edge applications that entertain, educate, and inspire.

Overall, my internship experience in translating physical escape rooms into virtual games was transformative, providing me with valuable skills, insights, and a passion for immersive technologies. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize education and create engaging experiences for individuals in various fields.
