The courses that came as the biggest surprises to me were MATH240 and COMM107 because I underestimated them in difficulty. I anticipated MATH240 and COMM107 to be easy classes, but it turned out to be a lot tougher because the math in MATH240 was a lot more complicated due to the properties of vectors and matrices while COMM107 required us to make speeches, which I realized needs tons of practice and rehearsing to give a good presentation. I recommend future students to always assume the classes they take will be difficult so that they will prepare a lot and hence be more equipped to handle their classes. I have been able to develop a great relationship with my CMSC216 professor and my teacher assistants by regularly attending office hours and asking them questions. I believe that incoming students should also attend office hours and ask questions so they can not only learn more, but also develop a good relationship with their professors and teaching assistants. I developed plenty of friendships with my classmates, which helped me feel more comfortable and familiar with the learning environment. However, one thing that I had to overcome to befriend new students was my shyness of talking with students I haven’t met before. I recommend that future students also try to talk to and befriend new people as well. Some aspects of university life that I was least prepared for was the fast pace of the courses, as I often found myself falling behind in some of my classes. I recommend incoming students to immediately study everything they learned every day so they can understand the material faster.
