The course that came as the greatest surprise to me would be ENME272, Introduction to Computer Automated Design. In this course I found that I really enjoy working with CAD software and creating custom parts. This class has made me like my Mechanical Engineering major even more and makes me want to pursue a career in the field. I took this class because it is a requirement with my major but would recommend that anyone interested in CAD should take this course. If someone was looking for a similar experience but related to another field I would look for the introductory courses that are very applicable to the actual field.
Forming relationships with faculty is an important tool unique to universities. Personally I have best utilized this with my relationship with my Calculus II professor. This relationship ensures I will have better success in understanding math concepts and have someone I understand to fall back on to explain things. In order to pursue relationships like this I would recommend being active in class and asking questions. Professors will notice if you try to stand out.
My relationships with fellow students has made adjusting to university life much easier. I have found a group of people that I can regularly hang out with in order to take my mind off of any stressful work. The hardest part with pursuing these relationships has been finding free time between classes and other requirements. In order to make the best use out of these relationships with peers I recommend picking up some extracurricular and being consistent. People notice when someone shows up to every meeting and it only increases the chances of making meaningful connections.
Out of the many aspects of university academic life, I was least prepared for how important time management would be. With so many things going on all of the time it has been crucial to keep track of what I need to be doing and when it needs to be done. I recommend using some sort of calendar app to keep track of events and checking Canvas often. Sometimes events and assignments can fly under the radar so it is important to be thorough so nothing gets missed.
