Deformable Bodies, ENME 489Y/808Y
Deformation and failure mechanisms for solids made of metals, ceramics, and polymers are considered with their mathematical and design models. Plasticity models describe the load induced permanent deformation of metals. The indentation hardness tests are related to plasticity. The fracture, fatigue, and creep modes of failure analysis seeks to explain the mechanism, the use in design and their interrelation.

Dynamic Behavior of Materials and Structures, ENME 661
This course focuses on the dynamic response of materials and structures to dynamic loading events. Topics include: theory of wave propagation; plane waves, wave guides, dispersion relations; shock waves, equations of state; dynamic deformation mechanisms, adiabatic shear banding, dynamic fracture. Special emphasis will be placed on the dynamic response of materials and structures for new and traditional sensing and measurement applications, such as ultrasonics, MEMS, and smart materials. Computational methods for modeling the dynamic response of structures will also be addressed.

Composite Materials, ENME 672
Micro mechanics of advanced composites with passive and active reinforcements, mathematical models and engineering implications, effective properties, damage mechanics, and recent advances in "adaptive" or "smart" composites.

Continuum Mechanics, ENME 670
Mechanics of deformable bodies, finite deformation and strain measures, kinematics of continua and global and local balance laws. Thermodynamics of continua, first and second laws. Introduction to constitutive theory for elastic solids, viscous fluids and memory dependent materials. Examples of exact solutions for linear and hyper elastic solids and Stokesian fluids.

Elasticity of Advanced Materials and Structures, ENME 677
This course focuses on the the application of elasticity theory. Analysis of stress and strain; equilibrium and compatibility conditions; plane stress and plane strain problems; torsion and flexure of bars, general three-dimensional analysis, energy methods, thermal stresses, and wave propagation.

Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Processes, ENME 382
Basic material structures and properties. Mechanical behavior of materials. Manufacturing process theory. Material processing. Quality assurance. Laboratory experiments.

Statics, ENES 102
The objective of this course is to understand the role of engineering mechanics in the design of structures. Fundamental mathematical and physical principles in Statics and Strength of materials will be introduced including: vector analysis, equilibrium, deformation of materials, and material properties. These principles will be applied to the mechanical analysis of structures. Students will work together in teams during the course of the semester to apply mechanic principles toward the design of a model bridge structure.
