Due: 9am, March 4, 2009.

The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with the hypertext markup language (html) and step-by-step procedures for using a text editor to create and modify files. You'll need the latter to write source code in Java, and script files for Matlab in ENCE 201.

Problem 1

If you don't already have a home page, create a file called welcome.html inside the ../pub i.e.,

    >> cd ../pub
    >> vi Welcome.html

and type in the minimal HTML Document on pages 27-28 of the class reader (it's part of the tutorial "A Beginners Guide to HTML").

Add a picture of yourself to the home page -- you can use the one on the "meet the class" page if you want.

Goto the ENCE 200 "Meet the Class" page, and check that it is correctly linked to your home page. Please let me know if the link doesn't work.

Problem 2

Create an online version of your resume in a file called resume.html. Create a link from "Welcome.html" to "resume.html"

Problem 3

The Pearl River Tower (PRT) project (Google: pearl river tower), scheduled for completion in late 2010, will be the most energy efficient tall structure in the world, and is perhaps the best example of a long-term trend toward sustainable energy managent systems in buildings.

PRT will generate 60% of its energy requirements through a combination of four strategies:

Reduction (i.e., reduce demand from HVAC and lighting systems; use of triple-glazing facades; coupling of energy management systems),
Absorbtion (i.e., take advantage of wind and solar energy sources that impact the building envelope; integrate photovolaic systems into the building skin),
Reclamation (i.e., harvest energy already in the building system -- use recirculated air to heat/cool fresh air before it is delivered to occupied parts of the building), and
Generation (i.e., use micro-turbine technology to generate power).

Develop a web page that highlights the PRT project. Include on your web page:

An image of the PRT.
A link to the architects -- Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago.
Use Google Maps to show the geographical location of the PRT project.
A brief writeup on each of the four energy managemet mechanisms (i.e., reclamation, generation, ..etc.).
Links to three sites in the US devoted the energy management of buildings.

The grader will visit your site and grade the homework soon after the due date.
