Homework Assignment 2

Due: 12pm, March 14, 2008.

Design of a Simple XML Language

In Part 3 of Assignment 1, you built a web page containing references to Civil Engineering Wonders of the World. Examples include: Golden Gate Bridge, Pyramids of Giza, Great Wall of China, and so forth.

The purpose of this assignment is to design a simple XML language that you would use to describe these entitites. A complete description could include:

• Name.
• Goegraphical location.
• Country in which the system is located.
• Dates in which the system was created.
• The system type (e.g., building, bridge, wall).
• A note on why the system is important.

Create a web page containing three parts:

• Problem Statement.
  Develop a short description of the CE wonders that will be covered by your language. I would suggest that you choose just two wonders (e.g., two buildings, or perhaps two bridges).
• Keyword Design.
  Create a simple table containing the keywords that will be in your language, along with the meaning of each keyword.
• Examples of XML Markup.
  Create an example of how your XML language would be used.
• Hierarchy of Keywords and Content.
  For each example, draw a tree diagram of the tag hierarchy and content.

Note. This assignment is deliberately open ended. We will be looking for elements of creativity in coming up with tags and their organization. The light blue class reader contains instructions on creating tables in html, e.g.,

There is nothing to hand in -- the grader will simply visit your web page soon after the due date. Hint. Don't link your home page to your assignment until early-in-the-morning March 14.
