RLIN, originally known as BALLOTS, is a computer program created at Stanford University which automates book processing. It was chosen as the processing system by RLG. RLG, Research Library Group, was formed in 1974, and included New York Public Library, Yale, Columbia and Harvard.
In 1978, RLG changed the name of BALLOTS to RLIN - Research Libraries Information Network. By 1983, it had the largest data base next to OCLC and included over 12 million records.
