After the tragic burning of the great library at Alexandria, Cleopatra, the last of the line of Ptolemies, initiated the founding of a new collection. Mark Anthony, acting on behalf of Caesar, added to this endevour by presenting a library at Pergamum to her. However, this was not established as a public library.
