The Harvard University Library, founded in 1638, is the
oldest library in the United States and the largest university library in
the world. It contains more than 12 million volumes in addition to
manuscripts, microforms, maps, slides, photographs, an expanding number of
databases, and other materials, with collections maintained in more than
90 libraries. Most of these are in Cambridge and Boston, but other
locations include Washington, D.C., and Florence, Italy.
