Hello! My name is Austin Turner, I am a sophomore at the University of Maryland, College Park in the Mechanical Engineering program. I chose to study engineering because I love to find out how and why things work and am constantly trying to find ways to improve and optimize the things I do in my daily life. I plan to get a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering and hope to work in the automotive industry doing some kind of design.

I am a part of Terps Racing, a club that designs and builds race cars to compete against other universities across the nation. I joined Terps Racing back in Fall 2021 and have learned so much since then. What we learn in class is mostly theoretical - equations, theories, and some basic real-world application, but as a member of the Baja team, I have gained a new perspective on how what we are learning can be applied to the real world. We are challenged to design, build, and race an off-road race car over the course of two semesters, which requires time management skills, leadership skills, and general knowledge surrounding machining and designing for manufacturing. Coming into the fall, I knew next to nothing about any of this, but over the course of the two semesters, I learned so much from the upperclassmen, including how to weld, use a manual mill and lathe, how to use CAD and simulation effectively, and have seen myself becoming a leader and teaching what I have learned to new members throughout the year.
