Amoni Hawkins' "Awareness Essay"

First off, I would like to say that this was both an interesting and unexpected way to end my final semester as a First Year Freshman. I definitely wanted to keep living in my dorm and going to the diner (I really miss those cookies) every day but it is okay. During the first acute planetary crisis, I would say that my biggest challenge would be waking up for my 10 a.m. classes. Not only I am in the comfort of my own bed again but also my sleep schedule is completely messed up. An insight that I have gained as a college student is that most of my teachers adjusted incredibly well and the transition was smooth.

Some other challenges of being a student in this situation is being at home and not a closed environment such as a classroom where everyone is learning. There have been times when my grandmother might walk into my room and say something that my whole class does not have to hear. It is never anything bad, but I just do not want people to hear what is going on in my personal life. I might be taking an exam or quiz and the TV in the other room is too loud and I have trouble focusing. Other than that, I have had no problems. Things that have worked well during this time would definitely have to be Zoom and Panopto Recordings. I prefer those over just keeping pictures of notes and PowerPoints from my professors. By hearing their voices, I feel like I am back at school again. Because everything is going well for me, I cannot think of any improvements that can be made.

If I were to have another partial (or whole) semester of learning at home again, I would like to see the demand of projects, papers and homework assignments to decrease or at least for their timelines to be less pressing. I do not think that professors should try to go as hard as they would in person because we are in completely different situations. A student can have a multitude of new problems come up as they live at home especially during a global pandemic. I personally would switch the environment that I work in to be more productive instead of leaving my bed to go straight to my desk two feet away. I hope that I will be able to go back to campus for the first semester of sophomore year but if that does not happen, I will not be too upset.
