The Goatweed Butterfly

By Toure

My butterfly is called the Goatweed Butterfly. The male and female look a little different. The female has more orange and black. The male is more red and orange. Their size is 2 1/2 - 3 1/4 inches. They live in the southern United States, near streams and open fields. There are two forms of the Goatweed butterfly. The winter form lives from August to May. and the summer form lives from July to August. Goatweed butterfies eat dung, sap from trees and rotten fruit. The larvae are greyish green. They live in rolled leaf nests. They eat all of the leaf except for the vein, to make a resting place. They eat goatweed.
