William Grant Still
by Yun Sang
William attended the New England Conservatory
of music and the Oberlin Conservatory of
music. He wrote operas, ballet, symphonies
and musical poems. William was the first
African American to conduct a major
	orchestra. William combined black and
	European music. Most people thought
black people couldn't compose or play serious
	 music. He proved them wrong.
