O'Higgins se encontró en casi todos los combates de la lucha por la Independencia y con su arrojo y decisión obtuvo la victoria en la batalla de Chacabuco, el 12 de febrero de 1817, con la que el país volvió a ser de los chilenos. Y pocos días más tarde, el 16 de febrero, fue proclamado Director Supremo de Chile.
O'Higgins, además de ser un valiente soldado, fue un político y estadista ilustrado, de muy buen criterio. Hizo redactar una Acta de la Independencia, la cual aceptó y firmó el 1 de enero de 1818; y proclamó el 12 de febrero de 1818 con la cual queda Chile en calidad de nación, libre e independiente.
Bernardo O'Higgins was, unquestionable, the first soldier of Chile; he was the hero of many combats and a self-denying fighter for the Independence of the country.
O'Higgins was in almost all the combats of the fight for the Indepence and with his fearlessness and decision gained the victory in the battle of Chacabuco, the 12th of February of 1817, where the chileans got the country back. And a few days later, the 16th of February, he was proclamed Supreme Director of Chile.
O'Higgins, besides being a brave soldier, was a politicians and a learned statesman, with a very good discernement. He ordered to write an Independence Acta, which he acepted and signed the 1st of January of 1818; and proclamed it the 12th of February 1818, with which Chile was stated as a nation, free and independent.
