Microbats

by Dominic

Microbats live in South and Central America. They often have elaborate facial ornamentation. Some microbats have noses called nose leaves. There are 123 different kinds of bats with nose leaves. They are all microbats. Bats' nose leaves can look like a leaf, a tube, a spear, or a horseshoe. Nose leaves are folds of skin surrounding a bat's nostrils. The nose leaves contain a nose leaf, crest, lobe or sella, and sometimes a horseshoe. The echolocation comes out of the nose leaves. The bats are able to aim their echolocation in different directions. When the bat hangs upside down, the nose leaves help drain moisture off the bat's face.
