Univ100 Memoirs

As part of my Introduction to the University experience, we were required to participate in activities within the following four categories: academic, recreational-cultural, citizenship, and diversity. Personally, I enjoyed these activities because it was a great way to meet new people and interact with a highly diverse campus such as UMCP!!!!! YAY!!!

Academic

On October 3, 2007, I began a Winogradsky Column for my Geol124 discussion class. The basics of a winogradsky column: in a tube filled with soil and water,a complete ecosystem will develop and exhibit microbial succession over time and create numerous biogeochemical cycles that are essential to life on Earth. My column was constructed to research the affects of an acidic environment on sulfur-reducing bacteria(picture on the left). Sulfur-reducing bacteria prosper in a basic environment. Therefore, I hypothesize that changing their environment to a pH of 3-4 from its normal pH of 6-8 would result in different species of acidophilies(bacteria that develop when pH is significantly acidic). This is an independent group project between three other students and I(without input from TA's or Professor);it made me feel like a scientist. So far it has been successful and I know that you are anxious to know if my hypothesis was correct but I am not sure of that as of yet because I am preparing to test it right now. I have enjoyed this experiement because it is intriguing to see how little bacteria can affect an environment. On October 5, 2007,I attended Professor Chris Truman's Math220 Lecture between 12:30pm-1:50pm. I did so to see how the same Calc. information was taught by different professors and how it differs from a high school teacher teaching the same information because I partaked in AP CalculusBC in high school and I thought that I had a great and fun teacher.

Recreational-Cultural

On Thursday, September 20, 2007 from 12:00pm-3:00pm I attended the First Look Fair on McKeldin Mall. It was a very eye opening event because through this I learned about the University of Maryland College Park Caribbean Student Association(CSA). This group is comprised of caribbean students because I am part Jamaican and through this group I have the opportunity to connect with other students with my same background. This is a positive aspect of a UMCP because it offers you both diversity and a sense of unity with other students. The best part of the fair was all the FREE STUFF like notepads and mini-staplers. I was also interested in the Pre-Medical Society club and the African Student Association(ASA)(I am also African-Liberian/Sierra Leonean. I would like to get involved on campus activities and join clubs. I believe that I am fortunate to go to a university with a diverse body of students which has given me the opportunity to befriend students of different interests, background and nationalities. The World is a very diverse place and through the UMCP I believe that I am able to be apart of it in a smaller scale and I think that this will help me grow as an intellect and individual. The last two pictures above correlate to the DC Caribbean Carnival that I attended in June of 2007. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! The whole event was basically dancing in the streets of Dc; it originally began in the Islands and still goes on frequently today but in the Caribbeans it lasts for days but in DC it was only for the weekend, nevertheless I had a great time!!! I RECOMMEND that no matter what your nationality is you should go at least once!!!

Citizenship

On October 13, 2007, I volunteered at the Asbury Methodist Village(nursing home/assisted living) which is located near my house. I have been volunteering there since the summer before my freshman year in high school. As a volunteer I get the chance to interact with the residence and I enjoy it because I don't even feel as if I am volunteering but as if I am listening to my grandmother or grandfather tell me about their life. Through this I learn from their mistakes and or success which helps me in maturing as an individual. I enjoy taking the residents for walks to parks or outside to the garden so they can forget about their daily stresses and just enjoy the beauty of nature. I hope to one day have as intriguing stories to tell others as all the residents do!!!!!

Diversity

I am a Methodist and On September 25th, 2007, I attended a KCM meeting(center image) held at the Armory. KCM stands fro Korean Campus Ministry; its a Christian ministry that reaches out to the UMD campus Christians and Non-Christians. It starts every Thursday at 6:15pm and is usually over around 8-9pm. This time is filled with worship by singing hymns and praises, testimonies from students, and finally a speaker that conveys a message on how one could get closer to God. After that KCM is over optional bonding activities follow. KCM is a great way to learn fellowship and more about the Lord as a community; not only do you worship God but you learn to care about others around you. It is a very unified group and the people are really friendly. An interesting fact is that although the name of the group is Korean Campus Ministry there are a lot of Chinese students and a few African-American's. I think that it was a GREAT experience because I realized that the main point is that no matter what race or type of Christian one is in the end we all worship a higher being, "the Lord".

Recreational

One of my friends who will remain "anonymous" is ADDICTED to Asian(Korean, Japanese, and Chinese) drama series and I always see her watching them and laughing so in the first week of September, 2007, I decided to watch one with her and now i'm ADDICTED!!! I LOVE Asian drama's so much that my only ringtone now on my phone for everything including messages is a song from one of my favorite series. Honestly, I believe that there should be a club for it because I will admit that even sometimes when I'm doing my assignments I tend to take longer than I used to because I wonder off and watch an episode of a new show. So far my favorites include Coffee Prince(Korean Series, first pic), Hana Yori Dango Season one and two(Japanese Series, second pic), Goong: Princess Hours(Korean Series, third pic), Full House(Korean Series, fourth pic), Sassy Girl(Korean Movie, 5th pic), Delightful Girl(Korean Series,6th pic),9 End 2 Outs(Korean Series, 7th pic), Hana Kimi(Japanese Series, 8th pic), Autumn In My Heart AKA Autumn Tale(Korean Series, made me cry,9th pic),Death Note I and II(Japanese Movie, 10th pic), Hana Kimi Taiwan(Chinese Series, 11th pic), Death Note(one of my favorite movies), Kimi Wa Petto(Japanese Series), My Girl(Korean Series),Wonderful Life(Korean Series),The Devil(Korean Series),A Love to Kill(Korean Series), Time Between Dog and Wolf(Korean Series); I have too many to name but watching these shows truely help me to release stress because I forget about all my assignments and just enjoy the show!!! The funny part is that it is contagious because my roommate is addicted too so we watch it together which is a good way to bond!!
