Qualitative Methodology and Research Resources

DrawnToScience.org is part of Project Nexus, a collaborative project sponsored by the National Science Foundation to develop and test a model that will prepare, support and sustain upper elementary and middle level specialist science teachers. Drawings by teachers were used as one source of data to study how teachers’ science identity changed over time. Using a well-developed qualitative methodology, drawings were analyzed with a scoring rubric based on Taking Science to School (NRC, 2007) and Learning Science in Informal Environments (NRC, 2009), published by the National Academy of Science. Triangulation of data sources was achieved through the use of interviews with teachers and written text.

A recent publication details how preservice and new teachers’ ideas about science teaching and learning changed as a result of an innovative science methods course and an internship with informal science education program. A section for teachers focusing on how the methodology can be used with action research in education is also available.
