

Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst disasters in history, killing 1,836 people (and leaving 705 missing) and causing over ninety billion dollars in damage. Most of the damage and casualties were caused by the flooding that resulted as a failure of the levees. Organizations such as FEMA were criticized for their slow response to the disaster. As the city of New Orleans rebuilds after the disaster, the levees have been redesigned in hopes of avoiding another such catastrophe.
