DIVERSITY HORIZONS

November 6, 2007 CSPAC- Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center- North American Indian Cello Project On Tuesday, November 6th I went to the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center to see the North American Indian Cello Project for my diversity requirement. Reflecting back on the performance, I thought that it was a very unique experience that I would definitely like to be apart of again in the near future. At the beginning of the performance, Dawn Avery, the featured cellist and singer, walked onto the stage to open with her first piece. The first piece, Anoki, did not appeal to me because it was very long solo, with a man in the background rotating a drum-like instrument. Her second song, Decolonization, was by far my favorite. It incorporated the National Anthem with it and the way it was played sporadically. It made me think about the actual decolonization on Native Americans.

RECREATIONAL-CULTURAL

September 28, 2007 Adele Stamp Student Union & Nymburu Cultural Center- The 26th Annual Block Party/All-Nighters As a part of my Web Memoir, I went to the All-Nighters Block Party for my recreational component of my assignment. At the All-Nighters there were step shows, a fashion show, eating contest, A-Capella concert, casino, and halo 3 tournaments. Because this very social event happened so early in the semester, I was able to make new friends and fortify the new relationships with other friends that I had previously made. The All-Nighters had a lot of free giveaways that I took advantage of as well. I got a free Superbad t-shirt, along with various posters and brochures of groups around campus. I learned a lot about what they have to offer on campus and the upcoming events in the near future.

CITIZENSHIP

October 20, 2007 Promoting ELT to Oakland Mills High School Columbia, Maryland During the weekend of Homecoming for the University of Maryland, I went home. As it turned out, my high school’s homecoming football game was the same time as UMD’s football game. Going back to school, I saw a lot of people that had graduated in my year, along with current seniors that were still undecided in where they wanted to go for college. They asked me about the university and that’s where I began to promote the university in all of its glory.

ACADEMIC

Monday October 15, 2007 ARCH100 Finishing up my UNIV Web Memoir, I went to my roommate, Edyta’s, architecture class. That day, we learned about ideas that go the design process. The professor explained that in order create a perfect spot for a piece of architecture, architects must take into consideration the climate, topography, the type of soils, and the other aspects such as location and the buildings around it. We looked at certain types of cathedrals and churches, for example gothic cathedras versus early Christian churches. After attending that class, I have been much more aware of the buildings that surround me. Beforehand, I thought that buildings consisted of materials and handiwork, not considering the actual though process.
