History of the American Red Cross
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. A cornerstone in the American tradition of robust civil society, the organization is guided by its long-standing congressional charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement. Those seven fundamental principleshumanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universalitynot only operate in national campaigns and at the highest levels of administration but also play an important role in guiding the actions of local initiatives
One in every two hundred Americans serve as Red Cross volunteers; and the fastest growing segment of that volunteer population is young people, who currently constitute a full 35 percent of the organization. Given the support and organization of local American Red Cross chapters, youth have contributed millions of volunteer hours per year over the past decade.
Youth Affirmation, an initiative from American Red Cross National Headquarters in Washington, DC, recognizes the important contribution of young volunteers and seeks to tap into their full potential by providing additional support and resources.
