Self-organizing improved confinement transitions in tokamaks:
Comparison of theory and observations

Tokamaks undergo spontaneous transitions from poorly confined states to well-confined
states. Such transitions are refered to as Low to High (confinement) or L-H transitions.
I will briefly review our recent theory for the onset of such transitions to improved
confinement states and compare the predictions of this theory with observations on the
DIII-D tokamak at General Atomics, San Diego.
