New Ebola Outbreak

Newly Discovered Ebola Virus Associated with Hemorrhagic Fever Outbreak in Uganda

The news article introduces the new Ebola strain as 'unlike any other' previously studied which is regarded in the journal publication as a less virulent strain of the diseases very fatal cousins. The news article claims that out of 100 infected people in Uganda, 37 dies from the disease. The journal only mentions 29 collected samples of which nine fatalities were reported.

The journal article actually has no conclusions section. The paper is more of summary of the methods and techniques used to conclusively identify the Ebola strain and classify it in a phylogenic tree. The news article also mentions that scientists are uncertain as to why the Sudan and Zaire strains of the virus are so deadly. This question is not mentioned in the journal, as it does not pertain to the topic of the paper. The news article references the bigger picture of the outbreak by saying 'the new finding also raises the question of whether vaccines being developed for Ebola-Zaire and Ebola-Sudan will work against the Ugandan species.' This aspect of the outbreak was not mentioned at all in the original publishing however it is a logical connection to make.

This finding does not discredit a previous study or body of work but adds to it. The journal article mentions the large genetic differences between the filovirus species as a result of the different niches the viruses occupy across Africa. It seams like a scientists dream work, discovering a new species and using modern techniques to classify it among its relatives. For the most part, the news article accurately relayed the information from the journal source. The author took some liberties in achieving relevancy and exigency but did not jeopardize the information in doing so.
