The Annual Spring tournament of the University of Maryland Go Club

Date:

Saturday April 16 and Sunday April 17 2005.

Prizes:

  • $250 guaranteed cash prizes, including
  • The John Groesch Memorial Prize for the best performance by a player under the age of 20 who is new to tournament go (defined by less than two years of tournament play). This year, the prize will be a $50 and a trophy.

    Saturday Schedule: 
    8:30-9:00 Registration 
    9:30 Play begins round 1. 
    There will be three rounds on Saturday. 
    We expect to be finished by 6 p.m..

    Sunday Schedule: 
    11:00 -- Play begins round 4 
    The Union opens at 11:00. Play begins as soon as possible. 
    We expect to be finished by 5 p.m.

    Format: 
    5 rounds; 1 hour plus overtime at 20 moves per 5 minutes (or 5 byo-yomi periods of 20 seconds). 

    Fee:

    $25 for the weekend. AGA (American Go Association ) membership is required.  Attending both days is not necessary. Students who are members of the Univesity of Maryland club will have their registration fee waived (AGA is still required).

    There is no fee for membership in the University of Maryland Go Club.

    AGA Full membership is 30.00. AGA Limited membership is 10.00 (no journal).

    Children are welcome.

    2004 Tournament Results

    The 2004 John Groesch Memorial tournament was played on April 17-18, 2004. We had 29 players, 12 of whom were at the dan level. UM Go Club member Yupei Xiong won first prize (Yupei is a University of Maryland student working towards a Ph.D. in Mathematics; he holds the 1 dan professional rank in China.), going undefeated for five rounds. Yubo Liu and Juan Quizon tied for second place with 4 wins. The John Groesch Memorial Prize for the best performance by a player under the age of 20 who is new to tournament go (defined by less than two years of AGA tournament play) was shared by Yubo Liu and Jeffery Chou, both of whom scored 4 points. The kyu prize was won by Joseph Carl (4 points) and the lower kyu prize was shared by Brian Hanaoka and Jeffery Chou (with 4 points each). This tournament is held annually during April.


    Directions:

    From the North:

  • Take I-95 South to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495).
  • Take Exit 27 and then follow signs to U.S. 1 South toward College Park.

    From other directions:

  • Take I-95, I-270, or the other road of your choice, to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495).
  • Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park).
  • Proceed south on U.S. Route 1.
  • Turn right onto campus at the main gate (Campus Drive)
  • Proceed straight through the rotary with an M to Stamp Student Union.

    Parking:

    The tournament is being held in the Stamp Student Union. There is paid parking directly across the street (Union Lane). To get to this from the directions above, turn right on Union Lane, just after the Student Union, and then left into parking. There is also free parking in Lot 1 (continue west of the Student Union along campus drive, past Cole Field House). There are other options; please read the signs to determine whether you can park where you choose to park. Addtional information from the University of Maryland Visitor Services on parking, local hotels, etc.
