In this book/CD-ROM package for graduate students and practitioners of interdisciplinary research on the land surface environment, Liang (geography, University of Maryland) explains optical remote sensing and discusses a variety of practical algorithms for estimating land surface variables quantitatively from remote sensed observations. Emphasis is on radiative transfer modeling of the atmosphere, canopy, soil, and snow, and on quantitative algorithms for sensor calibration, atmospheric and topographic correction, estimation of biophysical variables such as leaf area index, and geophysical variables such as skin temperature. The author assumes no special mathematical background beyond a working knowledge of statistics, calculus, and linear algebra at an undergraduate level.
