He accomplished this task through collecting articles relevant to ray floret numbers and Fibonacci sequence from provided mathematical references, by assembling a table showing the putative values of the numbers of ray florets per head, and by performing statistical analysis of data collected by practicum advisor. The main benefit Evan received from his work in the plant sciences lab was that he was able to participate in legitimate lab work for an on campus fellow. His greatest challenge encountered during his practicum was when it was necessary to fix the meristem of one of the tested plants.

Gregory Jenkins: ELT Engineering Major
gjenkins@umd.edu
The Aurora Borealis: An Index of Electric Currents in the High-Latitude Ionosphere

Greg undertook the task of learning about space weather and what particular causes could be for the Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as the Northern Lights. Through this practicum, Greg was able to develop the skills necessary to predict space weather and solar winds. One of the greatest obsticles he faced during his project was not one of difficulty in the concepts behind it, but in finding the necessary motivation to actually complete the project itself. I guess he didn't like his topic very much...

Megan Askew: ELT Neurobiology & Physiology Major
maskew@umd.edu
Volunteering in the Operation Room of Shock Trauma at the University of Maryland Medical Center

Megan undertook the task of working in the post-OR and OR of the University of Maryland Medical Center. There, she was assigned the tasks of restocking medical supplies for the physicians, aiding the nurses in the OR , retrieveing blood from the blood bank, and preparing rooms for new patients. What Megan gained from this experience was the ability to help in completing all the steps required in giving the proper care to a patient. It gave her a perspective on what it is really like to be a doctor. An obsticle that she encountered was the fact that she was working in a high stress environment with people in pain, a difficult emotional situation for anyone having never experienced it before.
Back to Main
