The National Association of Mathematicians(NAM) will sponsor Undergraduate MATHFest VI on October 24-26, 1996 in New Orleans, LA. The resarch conference will be locally hosted by the Department of Mathematics on the campus of Xavier University with anticipated grant support from the National Security Agency(NSA), an agency of the Department of Defense(DOD). NAM anticipates providing financial support for approximately 60-70 undergraduate mathematics majors, juniors and seniors (mostly seniors) and approximately 15-20 accompanying mathematics faculty. Participants will be selected from approximately 30-35 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCU's/MI's). Applications for funding support are to be returned by September 27, 1996.
The purposes of Undergraduate MATHFest VI are to engage in concrete efforts on an annual basis to directly influence the number of under represented American minorities who pursue graduate study, leading to earning a graduate/doctoral degree in mathematics. Undergraduate MATHFest is about building productive bridges, partnerships and avenues that lead to success in addressing the pipeline issues of underrepresented American minorities in the mathematical sciences at the graduate/doctoral level. To achieve the goals of Undergraduate MATHFest VI, a three day research conference has been planned with scholarly presentations, panels, dialogues, and exchanges among four communities of scholars; the undergraduate junior/senior mathematics majors, minority students currently pursuing graduate degrees in mathematics, graduate faculty at doctoral granting institutions, and established minority mathematicians. Interested persons are invited to attend; however, available financial support is limited to the categories of persons listed earlier.
The Conference begins on Thursday, October 24. The opening session will be at 2:00 p.m. and the closing session ends at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 26.
Invited participants include John W. Alexander, National Research Council; Robert Bozeman, Morehouse College; Nathaniel Dean, AT&T Bell Labs; Mary Hawkins, Prairie View A & M University; Freda Porter-Locklear, Pembroke State University; Bonita Saunders, National Institute for Standards and Technology.
