A Little About Me

NEWS FLASH: I AM GETTING MARRIED ON AUGUST 7, 2010!!!!!

Being born into a Polish, Ukrainian, Argentinean and Russian family can be quite interesting, and honestly confusing, but its always plenty of fun. I also have a younger brother and a younger sister, and innumerable numbers of extended family members.

While an undergraduate, I worked at the Physics Machine Shop on campus for 3 years. I gained basic machining skills as a student assistant and was able to assist machinists in building different apparatus for the Physics and Engineering departments. Part of my duties were to train new student help in basic machining skills, and to oversee the daily maintenance of the shop floor. I was also the chemical specialist for the machine shop, doing all of the anodizing and other robust chemical processes.

My last year of undergraduate studies was spent as an undergraduate research assistant with the Quantum Computing Nanomechanics group at the Laboratory for the Physical Sciences under Keith Schwab (currently at CalTech). The group used nanomechanical resonators and single electron transistors to perform near-Quantum limited measurements. I assisted with redesigning the sample stage on the He3 dilution refrigerator to allow for lower operating temperatures. In the meantime I began the initial fabrication and development of a capacitive readout scheme for a Superfluid Gyroscope, one day hopefully to be integrated in the MAXIM NASA satellite array.

Along with my research work, I was involved in Etta Kappa Nu electrical engineering honor society, where I held the position as the Sergeant at Arms. Additionally, I was in charge of fundraising activities and was the resident grill-operator for society gatherings.

I graduated from The University of Maryland in December of 2004 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Physics after 4 ½ years.

At the moment I am working as a Graduate Research Assistant for Professor Reza Ghodssi at the University of Maryland MEMS Sensors and Actuators Lab.

In my free time, I love to cook, and to play music. I am a huge fan of making food from scratch, and have started to develop my own sausage recipes (I love a great Argentinean chorizo or a fresh Polish kielbasa). I play double bass and guitar at my church in Bowie, Maryland where I participate in the sanctuary orchestra and lead a contemporary praise band weekly. I am also a member of a 4-piece singer/songwriter folk-jazz ensemble where I play bass (http://www.eileenkorn.com). Occasionally I find time to freelance as a musician playing for community and local high school plays and activities.
