Being a part of SGC has provided me with the opportunity to connect with many others in the program and create a community where I feel welcome. Many of the friends I made in that class were taking the same classes that I was, as most of us were STEM majors. A number of them became my close friends. Although not many of my friends are in my specific major, the ability to form a small study group for exams in my organic chemistry and introduction to engineering classes were great help.
This program has provided me with the opportunity to challenge my own beliefs and opinions, encouraging me to reflect on my understanding of climate change and how it came to be while evolving my critical thinking skills. At the same time, it has enabled me to have lengthy discussions with those whose opinions and beliefs on climate change challenge my own. Using information from my time in the Scholars program, I have had the opportunity to discuss our future as humans with my father as climate change looms over us. While his opinions on the topic don't contradict my own, they don't exactly align with my own, allowing for a different perspective to be introduced to our beliefs.
Overall, the Scholars program has made me reflect on my understanding of climate change, the scientific method, and problem solving, while enforcing my current choice of career path. I will be able to take what guest speakers have spoken about with me to my future in the environmental field, both in my post-undergraduate education and my professional career.
