"Basically he was just donating and removing protons where I needed them and when he was finished, he left, unchanged. But there I was, some new and interesting compound..."

That's the thing about catalysts.
They're pretty boring and pointless on their own (e.g. H3O+) but
some reactions just AREN'T going to happen without them.
